Sixth football team runners up in South London Cup
Charter’s 6th Form boys’ football team have been pipped at the final post in their valiant attempt to defeat reigning champs SFX and win the South London Cup. Held at the prestigious Motspur Park training ground of Fulham FC, the final promised to end weeks of speculation as to which would prevail – the greater experience and athleticism of SFX, or the never-say-die heroics of our boys?
Starting the match against SFX as rank outsiders, our gifted individuals quickly lived up to their name and gifted their individuals with an early goal after an innocuous corner. However, showing the pugnacious character which took them to the final, Charter fought back and went deservedly 2-1 ahead after 20 minutes with wonderful goals from Matt Proctor and James Pagel. Sadly they could not hold onto their lead and went in to half-time 4-2 behind.
Despite a rousing half-time team talk and herculean efforts from Charter in the second half, SFX managed to score two more goals to end the match with the somewhat flattering scoreline of 6-2. Our boys fought to the very end and deserve great credit for the spirit that took them to the edge of victory. On a positive note for the future, the Year 12 students in the team will form the core of a rejuvenated team which will hopefully go one step further and clinch the trophy next year.
Congratulations to winners SFX and all the players on both teams who competed so well and were a credit to their schools. Mr Reid
