The Charter School

North Dulwich

Music

During Year 7, pupils will study the Elements of Music, Instruments of the Orchestra, Structure through Rap, Rhythm, Scales from different musical cultures and learn some songs for a yearly Year 7 Concert. Each module includes a range of listening and appraising, composing and performing tasks against specific criteria. Students learn to play the keyboard and a wide variety of percussion instruments. They also learn how to compose using music software.

Pupils improvise, compose and perform individually, in small groups and as a whole class, expanding their repertoire, knowledge and practical skills. The whole of Year 7 attend the Royal Albert Hall Year 7Orchestral concert- a highlight of our calendar.

All students are encouraged to join our wide range of free extra-curricular music clubs which mostly run at lunchtimes and after school. Students who attend these clubs are invited to perform at our regular concerts. Students can also set up their own small groups and spaces are available for them to practise together. We also offer instrumental teaching where students have individual or paired lessons with a visiting instrumental specialist. These lessons incur a cost.

We encourage all students to get involved in joint activities such as the whole-school production with the Drama department.
